Tai Chi Online Course Outline

Tai Chi Online Certification

Module 1: Tai Chi – An Overview

Part 1: Tai Chi - An Overview

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art and fitness regimen steeped in the Taoist idea of harmonious existence. It emphasizes conscious, calm, and deliberate movements, as well as precise, natural breathing practices. Some people consider it to be a moving meditation. The emphasis and flow of the work are important to it.

Topics to be discussed include:

      What’s in a name?

Tai Chi – a martial art?

      The purpose of Tai Chi

      Types of Tai Chi

      Historical Context

Part 2: Traditional styles of Tai Chi

These styles range in structure and "flavor," and are connected with varied motions and scales of movement: some "big frame" or exterior styles may have a broad and sweeping arm movement, whilst others may have a much smaller arm movement.

Topics to be discussed include:

      Chen style

      Yang style

      WuHao style

      Sun style

      Tai Chi progression

      Tai Chi forms

      Short form and long form

Module 2: The Benefits of Practicing Tai Chi

Part 1: The Benefits

Tai Chi is a simple practice, and some of the physical and mental health benefits of Tai Chi have been validated by Western scientific methods.

Topics to be discussed include:

      Accessibility

      Health benefits

Part 2: Psychological benefits

Tai Chi promotes psychological well-being by emphasizing awareness and breath control. The concentration on breath and gentle movement activates the parasympathetic nervous system.

Topics to be discussed include:

      Who can practice Tai Chi?

Module 3: Tai Chi Philosophy and Principles

Part 1: Tai Chi Philosophy and Principles

Tai Chi and Taoism

Taoist ideas may be used to deepen and improve Tai Chi practice, as well as to grasp the meaning behind some of the forms. The term "Tao" means "route," "route," or "principle" and refers to anything that is the driving force behind and the source of all that exists. It is not a concept that can be understood rationally, but rather through living in the flow of the Tao.

Topics to be discussed include:

      Wu Wei

      Balancing opposites: Yin and Yang

      All about Yin

      All about Yang

      The Five Elements

Part 2: Chi: Universal Energy

Understanding chi (pronounced "chee") is essential to Tai Chi practice. One of the goals of Tai Chi is to promote the proper flow of chi through the body. Chi can be translated as "breath," "life energy," "air," or "spirit." Chi is also referred to as prana, qi, ki, and ji. Chi is the animating energy that connects the universe and its inhabitants.

Topics to be discussed include:

Meridians: The human body energy channels

      Understanding direction

      Exercise: Find your direction

Module 4: Using Qigong

Part 1: Using Qigong

Using Qigong as a basis for Tai Chi practice

The term qigong is made up of two words: "Qi," which means "life-force" (and is written "chi" in this course because it is a more widely acknowledged western discipline), and "gong," which means "skill or achievement." Qigong is inextricably linked to Tai Chi and is an umbrella word for techniques that aim to awaken and liberate one's natural flow of chi.

Part 2: Find your Lao Gong energy

Topics to be discussed include:

Playing with energy: Find your Lao Gong energy

Part 3: Mirroring the Seasons

Playing with energy: Mirroring the seasons

Try this practice to feel the chi as it rises and falls. With practice, people may feel their chi rise and expand (spring, summer), fall back and withdraw (autumn, winter) with the movement.

Part 4: Playing with Energy Ball

Playing with energy: The energy ball

Play with the energy exercise, pulling their hands apart and bringing them closer together. Slowly twist your arms and forearms, palms facing each other, until one hand is on top and the other is on the bottom, keeping their hands a consistent distance apart.

Module 5: Principles of Tai Chi Practice

Part 1: Principles of Tai Chi Practice

Topics to be discussed include:

      Breathing

Principles of breathing for Tai Chi

      Exercise: Abdominal Breathing

      Energy

      Centering

      Exercise: Centering yourself

      Grounding

      Alignment

Part 2: Visualization

Tai Chi relies heavily on visualization. The exercise requires you to actively employ your mind rather than allowing it to zone out as you practice. Tai Chi is also a mental workout, particularly for imaginative talents. It is not a mindless occupation.

Topics to be discussed include:

      Mindfulness

      Slowness

      Flowing in curves

      Unifying the whole body

      Flow

Module 6: Some Basic Postures

Part 1: The Wu Chi Stance

Basic stance

It is critical to master the fundamental stance because standing right leads to moving correctly, and practice always begins with a few seconds of silent standing. It's also an opening position for Tai Chi forms, and it's not only about where they put their bodies; it's also about how they breathe and think.

Part 2: The Bow Stance

Bow stance

The bow stance is the form's basis. To go from the opening posture, when they stand with their feet hip-width apart and pointed straight ahead.

Part 3: Arm and Hand Postures

Basic arm

The goal of this position, like most others, is to promote the flow of chi throughout the body. Arms and hands should be supple, relaxed but not floppy, and curved and flowing, like in most Tai Chi forms. The curve is a single smooth line that runs from the shoulder to the outside of the elbow, down the back of the wrist and hand, and to the fingertips. There are no harsh angles here, just softness and fluidity.

Topics to be discussed include:

      Beak hand

Module 7: Getting Ready to Practice

Part 1: Preparing for practice

Topics to be discussed include:

      Where should you practice?

      What should you wear?

Part 2: Warming up

Topics to be discussed include:

      Warming up the muscles

      Shoulder mobility

      Neck rolls

      Side stretches

      Circling hands

Warming up the breath and chi

Module 8: The Beijing Short Form

Part 1: Movements 1-10

The Beijing Short Form, also known as the Peking Form, is a Tai Chi style derived from the Yang style that was established in 1956 by the People's Republic of China's National Physical Culture and Sports Commission in order to provide a uniform form. The goal was to make Tai Chi and its benefits more accessible to the Chinese people.
