Meteorology Course Online – Course Description

Unit One: The Earth as a Planet

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Outline the key composition the solar system

  • Define the term "Meteorology"

  • Understand the importance of seasons

  • Understand how the moon affects the tides

  • Describe the term "eclipse"

Definitions

  • Anticyclone

  • Convergence

  • Cyclone

  • Divergence

  • Front

  • Ionosphere

The Solar System

The planets orbit the sun in the same direction and almost in the same plane. However, their orbital paths vary enormously.

The Seasons and Night and Day

Despite the virtually constant energy supply provided by the sun, the organization of life on earth is adapted to seasonal change and short-term variety of living conditions. The explanation for this is in the relationship between the sun and the earth.

This unit will also discuss:

  • The Moon and Tides

  • Eclipses

Unit Two: The Atmosphere

The art of weather forecasting has challenged many minds, and much of the worldly wisdom displayed has been identified with weather lore and weather almanacs. However, it was not until the nineteenth century that technological developments provided the theoretical basis for meteorology.

Weather Observations

In the 1950s, the fundamental theories of hydrodynamics and thermodynamics were applied to the weather forecasting process by computers. Presently, such computers are usually used to provide weather predictions for industry, agriculture and the public.

Surface Observations

There are more observations at ground level than in the upper atmosphere. These ground level measurements include:

  • The measurement of air pressure.

  • The measurement of temperature.

  • The measurement of humidity.

Upper-air Observations

Besides modem methods of weather prediction, the needs of aviation demand that quantitative measurements of wind, pressure, temperature and humidity be obtained in the free atmosphere. Such data is gathered by observers at hundreds of weather stations across the continents and from ships in the oceans.

The Organization of the Atmosphere

When one considers the vast proportions of the solar atmosphere, the thin skin of the atmosphere upon which life on earth depends may be trivial. This fact has been dramatically shown on photographs of the earth taken from spacecraft.

The Passage of Solar Energy

Through the atmospheric mixture, the solar energy must pass before it can be received and used on the earth's surface, but during its passage through the atmosphere, certain important effects take place.

The Tropical Atmosphere

Many rays are most efficient in heating a surface at right angles to the propagating beam. This also applies to the sun's rays.

  • Pressure and Wind Patterns

  • Water Vapor and Precipitation

  • The Monsoons

The Mid-latitude Atmosphere

If there were no mechanisms for transporting energy, the middle and high latitudes would cool down, decreasing the amount of the outgoing energy until it balanced the solar supply.

  • The Distribution of Pressure

  • Major Wind Systems

  • The Polar Front

  • The Waves in the Westerlies

  • The Jet Stream at the Polar Front

  • Anticyclones

  • Cyclones

  • The Stratosphere

Unit Three: Weather Patterns

The science of weather is fascinating and this section of the work introduces terms and ideas, some of which have been used in previous units. However, these will be revised or sometimes expanded.

  • Air Temperature

  • Atmospheric Pressure

  • Wind

  • Barotropic and Baroclinic Atmospheres

  • Atmospheric Humidity

Synoptic Maps

  • The purpose of a synoptic map is to show the elements of weather at any particular time of a day.

  • The Signs and Symbols Used on Synoptic Maps

  • The method of showing broad patterns of pressure

  • Cold and warm fronts

  • Showing relative humidity

Unit Four: Weather Patterns (Continued)

The patterns of atmospheric pressure, wind and precipitation are in constant change, but certain patterns of pressure and wind underlie these conditions. These basic patterns result from interactions in the atmospheric system of the globe.

Regional Weather Phenomenon

In this section of the work, a more detailed discussion is given on phenomena described in previous parts of this course.

Temperate Cyclones

  • The Early Development of Temperate Cyclones

  • The Mature Stage of a Temperate Cyclone

  • The Occluded Stage of the Temperate Cyclone

  • The Decaying Cyclone

Thunderstorms

A basic requirement for thunderstorm formation is very unstable air, which can rapidly rise to great heights. The most common thunderstorms to occur are multicellular storms. These are clusters of storm cells, each lasting for thirty to forty minutes.

  • The Life Cycle of a Thunderstorm

  • The developing stage

  • The mature stage

  • The decaying stage

  • The complex stage

  • The Surface Winds Associated with Thunderstorms.

  • Lightning and Thunder

Unit Five: Weather Forecasting

Despite the use of modem technology and sophisticated equipment, which includes satellite stations, computers, and a widely distributed network of weather stations, prediction of weather conditions for more than a few hours into the future have always been a difficult task.

Data Collection and Analysis

Since the end of World War 2, the methods of making weather predictions have undergone many rapid changes in response to advances made in computers, satellites and communications. Intensive research is still in progress, and it is expected that there will be many more developments by the early part of the next century.

  • The Collection of Data

  • The Transmission of Data

  • The Modeling of Data

  • The Interpretation of Data

  • The Accuracy of Forecasts

Television Weather Casting

Weather forecasts are generally brought into the home by television, but now also by the Internet. By using an array of electronic equipment, television presents weather reports.

Setting Up Your Own Weather Station

Many people like to keep weather records, enabling them to set weather patterns and possibilities without going into too much trouble or expense.

Weather Hazards

The life structure on earth is very complex and has developed in the basic environment provided by the sun and the atmosphere. However, this does not mean that all life forms are completely adapted to their environment, but rather than in the natural order of things, some balance exists between a living organism and its surroundings.

  • Hurricane

  • Tornado

Unit Six: Atmospheric Pollution

There is nothing new about atmospheric pollution. Even before man appeared as the dominant life form on Earth, the atmosphere carried some pollutants. Therefore, the most difficult question to answer satisfactorily is, ‘What is pollution?’

Concentration of Pollutants

The total amount of air in the atmosphere is vast, even if only the air in the troposphere is considered. This is a global layer of air, some twelve kilometers deep, where mankind lives and emits nearly all of its waste products.

  • Sulfur dioxide

  • Carbon dioxide

  • Hydrocarbons

The Past Effects of Pollution

There are many historical reports of the effects of pollution, proving that this is not just a blight of the present age, although it must be added that modern age technology has increased the devastating effects.

The Greenhouse Effect

Sunlight, short wave radiation, passes quite easily through the earth's atmosphere. When it strikes, the earth's surface heat is given off, and the surface is warmed. Longwave radiation is given off and radiated back into the atmosphere. Some of this long wave radiation escapes into space, but most of it is absorbed by carbon dioxide and the other gasses that exist in small quantities in the atmosphere.

What is global warming?

Global warming, or as it is commonly known, the greenhouse effect, is the gradually increased temperature in the lower atmosphere of the earth.

The Ozone Layer

This is a band of concentrated ozone in the stratosphere, an upper layer of the atmosphere, between ten and fifty kilometers above the earth's surface. The ozone layer shields life on earth from the sun's ultraviolet radiation. Plants and animals that live at different altitudes have adapted to the different amounts of ultraviolet radiation.

  • The Causes of Ozone Depletion

  • The Effects of Ozone Depletion

Sunspots

Sunspots seem to appear in cycles. Over several years, they grow in number until they reach a maximum, then decline to a minimum, before increasing again to another maximum.

Unit Seven: Climatic Change

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Understand the relationship between methane and climatic changes

  • Recommend Atmospheric Cures

  • Discuss your view of the future of climate change

Methane

You may have noticed a slight sickly-sweet smell coming from a dustbin or a pile of rubbish. This is not a smell coming from any one specific thing. It is just a dustbin-related aroma.

Volcanoes

Many natural processes add to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The most obvious are volcanoes. Even when volcanoes are not in eruption, many of them show signs of activity.

El Nino

El Nino is the name given to the abnormally warm water of an equatorial current that creates a tongue of warm water, 12 000 kilometers long across the Pacific Ocean. This abnormal warm water comes at Christmas time, the time of the coming of the Christ Child. Thus, the Spanish who settled South America, gave the current the name El Nino, meaning "The Child".

Atmospheric Cures

Certain things can be done to prevent or reduce atmospheric pollution. The efficient use of energy would mean there is less need for electricity and other power.

  • Consuming the Gasses

  • Cooling the Temperature

Changing Climates

The Past

If digging is carried out deep through the rock layers of the earth's crust, finding evidence of past climates is possible.

The Future

Reflections on the implications to human life of recent climatic changes must begin with the sounding of a distant warning bell. Now mankind is producing environmental changes.
